Opus Dei and Cóir turn journalists?
Walking down past the College today I met a man handing out the ‘Independent Sovereign’ on the corner of Jail’s Cross/College Rd. I had already received a copy through my letterbox a week previous (along with mail from a few TDs preparing for a general election), and was pretty curious as to which one of the ‘No’ camps it belonged to.
After a bit of run-arounding, he informed me that he was doing it for a friend who was involved in Opus Dei and Cóir and Youth Defence, and had loads of materials in his house from all the above. I wasn’t aware Cóir had added journalism to their professions.
In all of this though I’ve begun to ask myself: Surely this isn’t all about a few gays getting rights and aborting a few babies. Cóir’s myriad arguments aren’t just a cover for these two issues. If Opus Dei etc are involved, surely there is some more intrinsic anti-eu issue engrained in their history.
If someone could make sense of it all I’d be greatful.

I have heard that end-times prophecy has a bit to do with it. There are many people on the far fringes of the highly religious crowd that believe multi-national organizations such as the EU and the UN either are or will facilitate the rise of the biblical anti-christ from the book of revaltions (strange as it sounds!). It’s one of the major reasons why evangelical sects in the US tend towards the highly nationalistic. Coincidentally, end-times prophecy is also one of the reasons why such churches are so zealous in their uncritical support of Israel.
Ted Haggard (a popular super-church evangelical pastor who has, since this documentary aired been disgraced when it was found out that he was secretly taking crystal-meth and sleeping with male prostitutes - hilarious!) goes on about it a bit in this documentary - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QElJ1QDtzCQ&feature=related
